Detailed 9-Day Kenya Road Safari

Day 1: Ol Pejeta Conservancy

Upon arrival, your 9-Day Kenya Road Safari guide will brief you before departure to Sweetwaters Serena Camp. En route, you will have views of the plains and snow-capped peaks of Mount Kenya. The camp overlooks a waterhole where giraffe, gazelle, and warthog come to drink. You will have lunch at Trout Tree Restaurant and enjoy a game drive in the predator-rich Ol Pejeta Conservancy. This conservancy contains two prominent sanctuaries, one for chimpanzees and another for rhinos. Later, drive back to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay at Sweetwaters Serena Camp.

Host to all the members of the Big Five (elephant, rhino, lion, buffalo, and leopard), the conservancy has a higher wildlife-to-area ratio than any other Kenyan national park. It is one of only four private game conservancies in Kenya. At the forefront of the Kenyan conservancy program, this conservancy boasts the largest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa. It is also the only chimpanzee sanctuary in Kenya.

  • Main Destination: Sweet waters (Chimp Sanctuary)
  • Accommodation: Sweetwaters Serena Camp – Luxury tented camp located inside Ol Pejeta Conservancy (Laikipia Plateau)
  • Meals & Drinks: Lunch & dinner (Breakfast not included), Drinks not included

You will have lunch at Aberdare Country Club and check into your hotel later. The hotel is modelled after Noah’s Ark and has four viewing decks with balconies and lounges that provide superb game viewing from the comfort of the lodge. The animals come to you! You will have dinner and overnight at the Ark Hotel.

You will arrive in time for lunch and check in at Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge. In the afternoon, enjoy a game drive at Lake Nakuru National Park, from where you will be transported to the hotel for dinner and an overnight stay.

Lake Nakuru is one of the Rift Valley lakes at an elevation of 1754m (5755ft) above sea level. It lies south of Nakuru, in the Rift Valley, and is protected by Lake Nakuru National Park. The lake’s abundance of algae attracts a vast quantity of flamingos that famously line the shore. Other bird species, warthogs, baboons, and large mammals are also at the lake. Eastern black and southern white rhinos have also been introduced to this area.

Masai Mara National Reserve offers a unique variety of animals. This hilly region is both humid and fertile as the rivers Mara and Talek carry water the whole year round. These rivers are full of crocodiles and hippos, with their banks covered in thick forest, gradually making way for bush and grassland. The abundance of water and food is why the Masai Mara hosts so many animals. The Masai Mara is, in fact, a continuance of the Tanzanian Serengeti National Park and has the most significant population of wild animals in the whole of Africa. A theatrical spectacle, the annual migration of huge herds of gnus and zebras, takes place between July and November.

Day 7: Lake Naivasha

After breakfast, you will drive to Lake Naivasha. On arrival, you will check into the hotel and spend the afternoon at your leisure with a boat ride on Lake Naivasha. Your dinner and overnight stay are at Sawela Lodge.

Lake Naivasha is a beautiful freshwater lake fringed by thick papyrus. The lake and its surrounds are rich in natural bounty, and the fertile soils and water supply have made this one of Kenya’s prime agricultural regions. Much of the lake is surrounded by forests of the yellow-barked Acacia xanthophyll, known as the yellow fever tree. These forests abound with birdlife, and Naivasha is known as a world-class birding destination. The lake’s waters draw a great range of game to these shores. Giraffes wander among the acacia, buffalos wallow in the swamps, and colobus monkeys call from the treetops while the lakes’ large hippo population sleep the day out in the shallows.

The ecosystem is mainly savannah grassland spread across the Kenya-Tanzania border. Other Park attractions include opportunities to meet the Maasai and spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Mount Kilimanjaro boasts Africa’s highest mountain peak and the highest free-standing mountain in the world. Even though the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro is located in Tanzania, the best view is from Amboseli National Park (strategically located at the foot of the mountain).
